THINKING THURSDAY – LITERACY
Good morning everyone.
Hope you are all well and ready for some literacy activities to get you thinking!
Yesterday you showed me photographs of your sunflowers. They are certainly doing well and you must be taking care of them.

Compound Words
“Sunflower” is a compound word. Compound words are words made of two (or more) shorter words joined together. Eg sun + flower = sunflower
Complete the activity on Seesaw. The compound birds have muddled up their tail feathers. Can you match them up to make a compound word? Write the compound words that you make in your red jotter. Choose 3 of the compound words to use in sentences.
Have some fun with the bird templates to make up your own compound words.

Tricky words
I have put an activity on Seesaw for you to practise the tricky words that we should be able to read on sight and also spell when we are writing. Work on 2 or 3 words to begin with - Look, cover, write and check. Have fun writing them in sand, salt, on the path, in earth, in the air or on someone’s back with your finger. You can make them with playdough, magnetic letters, stones, leaves etc. How many different ways can you make these words? Show me on Seesaw.

A or an?
Complete the activity on Seesaw. Write what the pictures are using “an” if the picture starts with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) and “a” for any of the other letters (consonants).  – ant, sock, egg, cup, apple, octopus, arm, snail and umbrella. This can also be written in your jotter, if you prefer.

Oliver’s Vegetables
Yesterday you found out that lots of your food comes from plants. Listen to the story of “Oliver’s Vegetables” again.

Read over the recipe for “Vegetable Soup” with an adult. (This is on Seesaw). Talk about the ingredients, equipment and instructions. Make some soup together. (Other vegetables can be used as well)

Write out a recipe that you follow at home to make something tasty. Make sure that you list the ingredients, the equipment, give clear instructions and add an illustration of what it should look like. I look forward to trying some out!

Complete the activity on Seesaw to sort the different fruits and vegetables depending on which part of the plant we eat. Do we eat the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits or seeds? Write the names of the fruits and vegetables where you think they belong. Some might go in more than one box. This can be done in your jotter, if you prefer.

When you are writing today keep thinking about the size and formation of your letters. If you are writing sentences remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

I can not wait to hear from you all later today and see what you have been up to.
