Hello there P6/7,
What a busy week and we are half way through already! You have sent me lots of super work already – I can see how hard you are working, well done!
Have a great day today!

Numeracy
Groups 1 and 2
Today, we will continue our learning about algebra. Remember that this is where a letter or symbol is used instead of a number. Hopefully after yesterday you will agree that it isn’t as scary as you might have thought but please email me if you feel unsure about it!
The work will introduce a new idea today – combining like terms or simplifying. This means putting everything together which is the same – this simplifies the equation. Have a look at the picture (attached or in Files) to make it clearer.
For example – p + p + p – 2 = 7
There are three ps in total and they all mean the same thing so we can put them together
Then, we have 3p - 2 = 7
The other point to remember is that if you see 4m it means ‘4 multiplied by m’ or ‘4 lots of m’ or ‘m + m + m + m’. This is just another way of making things simpler.
Task 1a – topic maths
Your first numeracy task today is to complete the ‘algebra task’. This can be completed on paper or in your jotter if you can’t print it out.
Task 1b – topic maths
Next, I would like you to try the ‘challenge cards’. You can do as many of these as you wish. They focus on writing an equation for a word problem.
For example – Sally and Jamie have 12 toys altogether. Sally has 7. How many does Jamie have – write an equation to show this.
We don’t know what j (Jamie) is but we do know that s (Sally) is 7 and the total is 12. So we could write 7 + j = 12
Give these a go and see how you get on – the answers can just be written out on paper – no need to print the cards off. Please let me know if you are finding this really tricky.
