Welcome back to week 7 of home learning! I hope you had a lovely long weekend filled with time to relax, play and enjoy time with your family.
This is a short week so I will be including a mix of different activities for you to do. Remember that there will be a literacy and numeracy task each day plus the home learning grid which you can dip in and out of, doing the activities you choose.
If you aren’t sure about something, just ask! I’m always happy to answer any questions.
We will be having a Teams class meeting at 10am today (Wednesday) so I hope some of you can join us there!
Mrs Muir 😊
Numeracy
Groups 1 and 2
Today, we are going to continue learning about money and spending. Today, we are going to learn more about the following areas –
- How can we calculate a discount?
- What are the key skills we need to calculate a discount?
- Why are percentages and fractions important when working out discounts?
Task 1 – numeracy (topic maths)
Have a think about where you see examples of percentages and fractions in money – usually it will be when there is a sale and money has been taken off an item, reducing the price. For example, you might see 50% off or half price.
Look online and in a newspaper or brochure (if you can find one!) to find examples of fractions and percentages in the media. Are all of them clear? Do some of them mislead you to think you are getting a bargain?

Task 1b – numeracy (topic maths)
Next, you are going to complete Textbook page 71. This focuses on discount prices, how much will be taken off the price and how much the item will cost after the discount.
The key skill here is to work out how much is being taken off the price using percentages. For example, if an item has 10% off, you need to find one tenth of the original price because 10% is the same as a tenth. Once you have found this (by dividing by 10), you will need to take that amount away from the original price.
Example 1 -
-Â Â £88.00 with a 10% discount
- £88.00 divided by 10 = £8.80
- £88.00 - £8.80 = £79.20
Example 2 -
-Â Â £76.00 with a 15% discount
- £76.00 divided by 10 = £7.60
- £7.60 divided by 2 (10% split in half to find 5%) = £3.80
- £7.60 (10%) + £3.80 (5%) = £11.40
- £76.00 - £11.40 = £64.60
Remember to lay your work out neatly and in an organised manner. If you can’t print the worksheet off, you can copy out the answers in your jotter or on paper.
Task 1c – numeracy (topic maths)
Next, calculate the new prices after the sale in the ‘Summer Sale’ file. Remember to show you working clearly and set out the three steps as we did above.
