Good morning P6/7,

Welcome back after a lovely, long weekend! I hope your weekend was filled with sunshine, rest and fun! This is week 4 of home learning – you are doing brilliantly – keep it up!

P7s – remember that your yearbook tasks are due to be sent in by this Friday. Busy busy!

Enjoy your Monday!

Mrs Muir 😊

Group 3
Welcome to Maths Monday! Today, we are learning more about adding and subtracting money. We will also be practising what we learned last Monday – how to give change.

Reminder - when we are giving change, you can work in two different ways. You can either count up from the amount you paid, to the amount of money you handed over – see ‘counting up or down’ photo. Or, you can count from the amount of money you gave, down until you reach the amount you need to pay – see ‘counting up or down’ photo.

When you are giving change there might be different options – for example, you could give £5 as a note or as 5 x £1.00 coins. You could give £1.20 change as £1.00, 10p and 10p or 50p, 50p, 20p. There will be lots of different combinations – usually people in shops try to give you back the least amount of coins they can but as long as it adds up to the right amount it is correct!

Task 1
In your jotter or on paper, complete p78 of the textbook (saved in files or on the app). This is all about giving change from £10.00 and £20.00. There are word problems involved so take your time and read them carefully.

Task 2
Look at ‘how to add money together’ – this is a step by step guide. Work through this example (£2.24 + £1.44 = ?) while checking the steps on the guide. If you manage to get through this with no problems and you get the correct answer (£3.68) then move on to task 2. If you find it tricky, try again until you get there! If you find this really hard, email me and I will give you further help.

Task 3
Look at ‘how to subtract money' – another step by step guide. Work through this example (£5.42 - £1.21 = ?) while checking the steps on the guide. If you manage to get through this with no problems and you get the correct answer (£4.21) then move on to task 2. If you find it tricky, try again until you get there! If you find this really hard, email me and I will give you further help.

Task 4
In your jotter or on paper, complete p79 of the textbook. This is further practice of adding and subtracting amounts of money. Remember to show your working and lay your work out clearly.

Afternoon Learning
If you have finished the tasks by the afternoon slot, use the time to practise your times tables, spend 20 minutes on Sumdog or Number Gym or create a poster about your learning.

Try out some of May’s daily maths challenges.

Log onto Lexia and complete your 20 minute slot. The teacher address you will need is kaye.armitage@fife.gov.uk

Try this week’s task in the Taskmaster channel on teams.

Extras

Today’s brainteaser – Starting at 45 872, count backwards in 10 000s. How many steps will it take to get as close to zero as possible without going into negative numbers? What number will you reach?

*The answer to Thursday’s riddle – a map!

A joke to start off this week –
What is a cat’s favourite colour?
Purrrrr-ple!
