Fun Friday!
Today we will be learning about measurement through STEM activities. Do not forget the 3 steps to success in STEM:
- Think and plan – what is the task? what will you need? Draw a plan or mind map to get your ideas on paper. Evaluate them, do you think it will work? Do you see any problems with your idea?
- Experiment – build your idea and test it out. If it did not work, why? What went wrong? What do you need to change to improve it?
- Complete – It has done the job you want it to do, you are an STEM Master! Well done 😊
Task 1 – We will begin by learning how to measure objects and distances using our feet, a ruler or a tape measure. Watch the video which will explain how you can measure distances.

Task 2 – Using your feet, can you find something which is the length of 3 of your feet?
Using a ruler, can you find something which is 5 centimetres long? (We use cm so we do not have to write out the word centimetres every time)
Using a measuring tape, can you find something which is 2 meters long? (we use m so we don’t have to write metres every time)
Task 3 – Choose one of the STEM challenges. There are a number of STEM activities for you to try at home. You can choose to do as many or little as you like. 👍
Extension challenge
Task 1 – Build a tower using junk modelling. How high is it?
Task 2 – Research height and length online. Can you find out the average length of an elephant? Using a measuring tape, can you measure how big this is and lay it out in your garden. Would an elephant fit in your garden?
Task 3 – Use your feet to measure how long all of the rooms in your house are.
I can’t wait to see all the fun things you manage to make!
Have a great weekend, stay safe and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts! 😊
